About

Meet Robbie Peterson from McCool Junction, Nebraska. Robbie has been farming since 2000 and has been irrigating all 24 years. Robbie didn’t know about drip irrigation before he received EQUIP money to help transform his field. Before using subsurface drip irrigation, Robbie used a hard hose traveler which was very inefficient, labor intensive, time consuming and did only a marginal job at irrigating. After installing SDI with the help of EQUIP, Robbie said “it’s the best thing that has ever happened to this farm”.

Robbie had 135 acres of drip tape and then added another 20 acres a few years ago. The first part of Robbie’s project was with EQUIP and the second part was out of pocket. Robbie feels that looking into EQUIP and seeing if it could apply to you, is a no-brainer. There are resources to help walk growers through the process. “It’s well worth your time and effort”.

Considering SDI?

Robbie feels that SDI (Subsurface Drip Irrigation) is the best thing for odd-shaped fields. “I wouldn't change anything” says Robbie. His odd-shaped drip field has power lines going through and a basin in it.

Water Efficiency

With drip irrigation, you can get by with less water since you aren’t losing anything as the water is being applied underground. With a pivot, you lose water through evaporation and transpiration, especially on windy and hot days.

Fertigation

Initially, Robbie thought his system would be just for irrigation but since it came with a fertilizer pump, Robbie tried it out. He applied a little less than what he did on the pivot irrigated fields. Robbie has been fertigating 2-3 times depending on the year. He fertigates through his SDI system using KTS, 32.0 and Boron, but he feels like it is pretty seamless.

Working with the NutraDrip team

“NutraDrip team has been great. Whenever I call for a service call, within a day or two they’re out addressing my issues.”
